Main: Twenty-three fourth-year INDEV students have just completed their mandatory eight-month field placement as World University Service of Canada volunteers with local development and environmental organizations in Botswana, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Malawi, Peru and Vietnam.

International Development student Sheila Ball, pictured with Mark Seasons, ENV Dean, Larry Swatuk, Director of the International Development Program, and Neil Craik, Director of SEED, received the first Scotiabank International Development Placement Award, as presented by Warren Jestin, Scotiabank’s Chief Economist and several other representatives, at an announcement on May 25, 2011 in the EV1 Courtyard. The first class of International Development students will be heading off to their 8 month field placements throughout the world this fall.
On Friday June 3rd, Roy Sesana, an elder Gana Bushman from the Central Kalahari Game Reserve in Botswana, Southern Africa, spoke to INDEV students, faculty and K-W community members, through his translator, about his ongoing struggle for land rights and the cultural survival of his people following a recent court decision upholding those rights. 4th year INDEV students, known as INDEVOURS, hosted the event and donated a portion of the event proceeds to his organization, the First People of the Kalahari. On Thursday May 12th, former Governor-General Michaelle Jean addressed 4th year INDEV students at the 2011 Stanley Knowles Humanitarian Service Lecturer, hosted by St. Paul's University College, the Faculty of Environment, and the Royal Bank of Canada. In her speech, "Building Global Solidarity" Madame Jean promotes investment over aid to her native Haiti, and challenged young Canadians to remake humanitarianism for the 21st century.
